i am using prilosec since years now. so should i start taking calcium supllements in order to prevent the risk of hip fracture?
Not necessarily, remember this is of late a report/study...Most of this is just based on experimental values. It works for some people or it doesnt work. You know the scenario. But of course, check near your doctor because he/she probably knows what's best for you (even though this is just a supplement).
Prilosec (and all the other bitter blockers) are well documented 'dangerous' drugs. They cause bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine in 100% of patients taking them. They also do malabsorption of numerous nutrients, including iron, calcium and vitamin B12.
You might want to find a doctor that will work with you to find and fix the CAUSE of your heartburn, rather than masking the symptoms with a perilous drug.
If you cannot find a good doc, then you may find a wonderful book by Sherry Rogers, M.D. very helpful. It is call: "No More Heartburn". Dr. Rogers explains the many causes of heartburn and other gastrointestinal problems and how to relieve symptoms by treating the underlying cause(s). I highly recommend this book.
