First light of day on Adderall XR-is this commonplace?
My 9yo daughter was diagnosed with ADHD-Inattentive type and took her first dose of Adderall XR (20mg) this morning. Today she totally lost her appetite (she said she gave away all of her lunch) and is for a while emotional tonight (she cried when I asked her to work on a school project and asked if she could watch a movie tonight and work on the project tomorrow).
Is this normal? What be your child like after the first dose? When will these symptoms subside, or will they?
Yes, that's heavy-duty speed (amphetamine). Anorexia (loss of appetite) is completely to be expected, and the emotion is on the small end of a clamber that extends into full-blown psychosis. It's a risky drug, and a mixed blessing. I also have to wonder why she would be starting it now. Isn't school about out for her?
These are normal side-effects of Adderall, including mood-swings. As long as I've seen it work, these symptoms don't subside, unless you jump back to your doctor to be prescribed a lower dose.
As for losing her appetite, make sure before she takes the pill she eat something (breakfast if in the morning), as this boosts metabolism and she'll gain back her appetite.
I am more optimistic than the others. Adderal is amphetamine and is a serious medicine. Appetite loss and insomnia are common and tend to stick with. You can try eating a big breakfast before meds, and hope there is enough appetite disappeared at dinner as it wears off. But many, if not most, kids drop stale their weight a little.
The emotionality you describe is a very common hasty side effect - I jokingly refer to it a crashing from speed - which is exactly what is is. My experience is that in the vast majority, this weakens over time. After a break from meds, it will likely recur if you restart again. I own seen anger, irritability, and most common, emotional fragility with crying hysterically for no good reason. With the XR, this often hits around the end of the college day.
So yes it is normal. The anorexia or loss of appetite will probably persist but may be able to work around (but may not and is a justification to stop or adjust meds). The emotionality will probably wear off over time - usually a couple weeks.
