Topamax and opiates?
i've been addicted to oxys for about six months now. i've been slowly weaning myself rotten of them, trying to go without methadone. i've been doing well so far, cut myself down from doing 6/80's a time down to 2 or 3 a day, hopefully soon i will be able to stop completely.
i was recently prescribed topamax (an anti-convulsant commonly prescribed for migranes) to treat bipolar 2, and i am afraid of the interaction this will hold with the opiates, but i don't want to wait until i get totally clean (probably another month or so) to start the topamax.
please don't deem me and please spare me your harsh words. i am trying to clean myself up and help myself here. i would quit the oxy cold turkey if it weren't for the withdrawals.

Let me start by truism I think it's great that you're trying to get off the Oxys. They are a terrible mannerism to have, and it's rough getting off. And I'm glad you're not going on any sort of maintenance program (like methadone) because that's just another craving to kick.
That being said, if you are only taking Oxycontin and nothing else, the subtraction effects are uncomfortable but never life-threatening. It's like kicking heroin, except it's a prescription drug with a different half-life (i.e. it might stay in your body longer, making withdrawal last longer). So... getting off the Oxys can be done quickly if you are willing to run through a couple days of sickness, maybe a week tops. You haven't been on them that long.
As for the Topomax, I would strongly suggest telling your doc (psychiatrist) that prescribed them what you're asking. They really have no right or endorsed power to do anything if you tell them you are taking Oxys (unless you're underage, then they will probably tell your parents). Their job is to provide information to preserve you safe, even if that means you are popping pills. Your health and safety is the most vital thing.
I do work in a treatment center with drug addicts and alcoholics and several of them are on Topomax for bipolar. Most of them don't jump to detox before reaching treatment, so they are taking their psych meds immediately after stopping their drug of choice. However, again, I'm not a doctor so I wouldn't want to make any promises. It'd really be best to talk to your doc to form sure. Prescription drugs interact in very dangerous, sometimes fatal, ways.
